Paperweights by Scottish Borders Art Glass for MacKenzie Jewellers.Whilst working with Paul Ysart during the 1960's at the end of the day when the old master Paul went home Peter Holmes would use the materials at hand, which was anything that was compatible with glass and would practice and experiment a new style of paperweight. This has now been recognised as the birth of the Abstract paperweight. The first of these was produced in 1966, and the company Peter worked with marketed these pieces. Now Scottish Borders Art Glass has a world-renowned reputation in the art of making abstract designed paperweights. Abstract paperweights which have never ending themes using the inner imagination is a very individual thing and hence Kenneth Scott, who has been working with glass for over 10 years, is also producing beautiful abstract designs of his own. Scottish Borders Art Glass Traditional styled paperweights date back to the popular French paperweights Baccarat,Clichy and S t Louis during the 1850's. Paul Ysart developed these traditional paperweights similar to French style in the late1920's until he retired. He would work in secrecy and only showed these techniques to 2 or 3 other glassmakers. Peter Holmes who was Paul's apprentice during the 60's is now producing traditional styled paperweights using the skills passed down to him from the old master. Peter Holmes has developed these skills and techniques and is recognised as one of the leading paperweight makers today. As Peter learned these skills from the old master he will now pass these skills on to the next generation of Kenneth Scott and Andrew Holmes.
